Personal Recovery Stories: Tracy’s Addiction Treatment During COVID-19

April is National Alcohol Awareness Month, dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the causes and treatment of alcoholism. As part of this effort, Tracy, a recent New England Recovery Center patient, was kind enough to share her experiences receiving treatment for alcohol use disorder while in our COVID-19-unit last December.

From the earliest days of the pandemic, our COVID-19 specialty unit has provided a critical respite for people struggling with addiction who also found themselves ill with COVID. Opened in April 2020 on our Westborough campus, the unit offers a safe place to recover from the virus while continuing to undergo detoxification and treatment under the careful supervision of our clinical staff.

What follows is Tracy’s story about her recent recovery journey.

A Safe Place to Stay on Track

“I stayed in the COVID unit for 10 days. I was continuously monitored and then transferred directly back to NERC once my quarantine was over. I was able to continue with my treatment throughout. Now, things are going amazing. I’m over 50 days sober and feeling great.

Because I was ill and very fatigued, knowing that I was in a safe place helped me to stay on track with my recovery. Being given the opportunity to follow through with my treatment despite being ill was so important.

The COVID unit is clean and sprayed with disinfectant cleaners frequently, and everyone is taught to be aware of surroundings and to maintain good hygiene. The staff was extremely sympathetic, cautious, and responsive to any concerns.

The atmosphere was quiet, and I was allowed to rest and recover from COVID. Every precaution was taken. I was monitored by nurses and felt very well taken care of.”

‘The Most Positive Experience Ever’

“I have struggled with substance use disorder for about five years. I was always a social drinker, but around 2015 I began to struggle with some past issues and trauma. I quit my job in finance and began to pursue my passion in the wine industry. I started to consume more and more, hiding it, and abusing it. The longest I was able to stay sober was 72 days, but relapses kept occurring.

After several attempts at rehab, this time at NERC has been the most positive experience ever. They have a very knowledgeable and supportive staff. It works when you have people on your side.”
